HERNE HILL VELODROME
Herne Hill Velodrome (only 15 minutes from central London) is an iconic outdoor 450 metre cycle track and only remaining venue still in use from the 1948 Olympic Games. In August 2012 it was resurfaced in a near-all weather, safer and faster tarmac. Many of Great Britain’s current and former Olympic champions including Bradley Wiggins, Laura Trott, Chris Boardman and Joanna Rowsell trained and raced at Herne Hill.
3 options at Herne Hill:
a.) Track Experience
Our track experience days are a great way to try track cycling for the first time. British Cycling Level 2 cycling coaches will get you up to speed riding fixed gear track bikes on our banked outdoor Velodrome, before giving you a chance to try a short taster race with the rest of your group (if required). As our Velodrome is larger and the bankings aren’t as steep as the Olympic standard tracks it is much easier for riders of all abilities to quickly pick it up.
These experience days include the use of our specialist brakeless fixed gear track bikes and British Cycling qualified track coaches. Our coaches take thousands of riders of all abilities, from beginners to National Champions, through their paces every year and use this experience to make sure our sessions are suitable for riders of all abilities whilst being great fun.
b.) Track Racing Experience Day
Try the track for what it was built for; racing! Track racing is one of the purest and fastest forms of cycle racing and one of the easiest to try for the first time. There are no hills, cars or corners to worry about, it’s just you, your colleagues or clients and 450m of smooth tarmac.
Your British Cycling Level 2 cycling coaches will get you up to speed riding fixed gear track bikes on our banked outdoor Velodrome, then get you comfortable riding close to other riders in a group. After that we’ll move on to some racing, giving you the chance to try a number of different track races, from short sprints to longer endurance races.
c.) Team Racing Experience Day
Cycling is often perceived as an individual sport, however teamwork and co-operation are key components to any major achievements in cycling. Our team race days are a great way to come together with your colleagues or clients and test yourselves in a team pursuit and other team orientated races. As opposed to the above experience, when you will be competing alone, this experience focuses on working and co-operating as a team to compete against other teams of a similar ability.
